How -To - Guide for Gel Testing Program Overview

Program Description

This intermediate-level course is a thorough program on gel testing, formally known as column agglutination technology. It is designed for laboratory technologists performing and reviewing serologic testing using the gel method. The course begins with a comprehensive review of antigen-antibody reactions and the factors that affect these reactions, which are fundamental concepts shared across all test methods. Participants will then explore the principles of the gel testing method and its limitations and will compare gel testing to solid phase red cell adherence and tube testing techniques. The course also presents reasons for false and non-repeatable results and discusses the potential use of alternative techniques.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss antigen-antibody reactions and factors that affect these reactions
  • Describe the principle and test methodology of gel testing including limitations
  • Discuss and compare different test methodologies
  • Decide when alternate techniques are indicated
  • Assess the clinical significance of observed reactions
