Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR) General Awareness Program Overview

Program Description

This training will provide medical facilities familiarity with the requirements of the Hazardous Material Regulations (HMRS), and to whom and what within their organizations the HMRs apply. This training will also enable individuals to identify hazardous materials (hazmat); and how to pack, label and complete transportation document for hazmat shipments. Examples will be provided during the training to illustrate the applicability of the HMRs to medical facilities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe Hazardous Material Regulations and their purpose
  • Identify hazmat employees in their organization
  • Classify hazmat for transportation
  • Pack hazmat for shipment
  • Complete labeling and documentation of hazmat shipments

CE Broker Statement

These courses are also approved for Florida continuing education credits for Laboratory Professionals and Nurses through Florida Blood Services Provider # 50-2063. Credits will be reported to CE Broker on a monthly basis. To obtain Florida credits, one must pass the quizzes with a score of 80% or higher. Individuals must choose between P.A.C.E. or Florida credits.

Contact hours

  • Completion of this program will provide 1 contact hour of P.A.C.E. continuing education credit.
  • Completion of this program will provide 1.0 contact hour of Supervision/Administration, Quality Control/Quality Assurance and Safety Florida CE Broker continuing education credit.

Speaker Credentials

Lyn S. Souter, MT(ASCP), MAOM has a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management. She worked for United Blood Services for almost 6 years and has worked for Blood Systems for 1.5 years. Lyn is the Manufacturing Processes Specialist for the California centers Component Laboratory and Hospital Services departments. Prior to joining Blood Systems she worked at HealthPartners, a large HMO in Minnesota, for 20 years.

Richard B. Castle, MT (ASCP), SBB has a Bachelor’s of Science. Richard has been MT accredited since 1974 and SBB accredited since 1978. Richard is a Manufacturing Specialist for Blood Systems, Inc. (BSI). He has worked for BSI since 1981.
