Blood Banking for Laboratory Generalists Program Overview

Program Description

This program is intended for clinical laboratory personnel working in a transfusion service and has been especially designed for those personnel who have laboratory experience but do not have extensive experience in the blood bank. The level of instruction is basic and this PACE program has been approved for 1 contact hour.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe and resolve common ABO discrepancies
  • State the requirements for antibody detection
  • Use basic techniques to identify antibodies
  • Describe pretransfusion testing
  • Select appropriate blood for compatibility testing
  • Explain prenatal and postnatal testing for Rh negative women
  • Evaluate complications of blood transfusions

CE Broker Statement

These courses are also approved for Florida continuing education credits for Laboratory Professionals and Nurses through Florida Blood Services Provider # 50-2063. Credits will be reported to CE Broker on a monthly basis. To obtain Florida credits, one must pass the quizzes with a score of 80% or higher. Individuals must choose between P.A.C.E. or Florida credits.

Contact hours

  • Completion of this program will provide 1 contact hour of P.A.C.E. continuing education credit.
  • Completion of this program will provide contact hour of Blood Banking Florida CE Broker continuing education credit.

Speaker Credentials

Hannah Acevedo is currently a Manufacturing Processes Specialist for Blood Systems in Scottsdale, Arizona. She has more than 40 years of experience in blood banking, including acting as Executive Director and Technical Director at United Blood services in McAllen, TX. Prior to working for Blood Systems, she was the Education Coordinator and Reference Lab Supervisor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX and taught a blood banking lab course at the University of Houston –Clear Lake City.
